Barn Owl

A ghostly and efficient night time predator, known for its silent flight

Conservation Status |  Low Risk

The Barn Owl is a medium-sized owl known for its heart-shaped face, white plumage, and silent flight. This owl is an efficient predator of small mammals, making it a crucial ally to farmers by controlling pests. Adaptable to diverse environments, the Barn Owl thrives in Pakistan’s countryside and urban fringes, where it uses trees, ruins, and buildings for nesting and roosting.

Habitat & Lifestyle
In Pakistan, Barn Owls inhabit open farmlands, grasslands, and the outskirts of towns and cities. They are nocturnal hunters, relying on their excellent hearing to locate prey, primarily rodents. Solitary by nature, they usually roost in quiet, hidden spots during the day. They breed in sheltered areas like tree hollows, old buildings, or cliffs, producing distinctive screeches to communicate with their mate or offspring.

Area Found
Barn Owls are distributed widely across Pakistan, with sightings common in Punjab, Sindh, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They are frequently seen around agricultural lands and abandoned structures, especially where rodent populations are abundant.
