Locally known as Palla Machi (پلا مچھلی) in Sindh, Hilsa is a migratory fish species that ascends from the Arabian Sea into the freshwater rivers of Pakistan, notably the Indus River, to spawn. It is highly esteemed in Sindhi cuisine, where dishes like Palla Machi are prepared using various cooking methods. The fish’s roe, known as aani, is also considered a delicacy.

Hilsa is an anadromous species, spending most of its life in the sea and migrating upstream into freshwater rivers to spawn. In Pakistan, this migration typically occurs during the monsoon season. The fish feeds on plankton and is known for its rapid swimming capabilities.

In Pakistan, Hilsa is primarily found in the Indus River Delta in Sindh. It also inhabits the coastal waters of Balochistan and the Arabian Sea. Recent reports indicate the reappearance of Hilsa in areas like Gwadar, Balochistan, marking a positive development for conservation efforts.
