Merlin

A small, agile falcon known for its swift flight

Conservation Status |  Low Risk

The Merlin is a diminutive yet formidable raptor found across various regions of Pakistan. Despite its size, it exhibits remarkable speed and agility, making it an efficient hunter of small birds and insects. While not as commonly observed as other raptors, it holds a unique place in Pakistan’s avian diversity.

Habitat & Lifestyle
Merlins prefer open terrains such as grasslands, shrublands, and forest edges. They are also known to inhabit urban areas, adapting well to human-altered landscapes. These falcons are solitary hunters, relying on surprise attacks to catch their prey mid-flight. They do not build their own nests but often reuse old nests of crows or other large birds.

Area Found
In Pakistan, Merlins are primarily observed in the northern and western regions, including areas like Hazarganji-Chiltan National Park in Balochistan. They are considered winter visitors in these parts, with sightings reported during migratory seasons. Their presence is more pronounced in open habitats where prey availability is abundant.
