Striped Hyena

A nocturnal scavenger found in Pakistan

Conservation Status | Near Threatened

The Striped Hyena is a medium-sized carnivore native to parts of Africa and Asia, including Pakistan. Known for its scavenging habits, it primarily feeds on carrion but will also hunt small animals when necessary. Despite being portrayed negatively in folklore, the Striped Hyena plays an important role in the ecosystem by cleaning up dead animal remains.

Habitat & Lifestyle
Striped Hyenas prefer dry, arid areas such as scrublands, savannas, and rocky terrains. In Pakistan, they are mostly found in hilly regions and desert environments. The species is nocturnal, meaning it is active at night and spends the day resting in dens or caves. Hyenas are solitary foragers but may live in small family groups.

Area Found
In Pakistan, Striped Hyenas are mainly found in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Sindh regions, particularly in remote, undisturbed areas. Although their population is declining, they still survive in some protected areas and national parks.
